33. Food Therapy: How Nutrition Impacts Anxiety, Stress & the Nervous System with Luis Mojica

Most people do not realize that every few hours they may be unintentionally activating their nervous system through the foods they are eating.

We often think about food through the lens of calories, nutrients, or long term health goals. But what is rarely talked about is how food interacts with the nervous system in real time.

Certain foods can stimulate the release of stress hormones like adrenaline. Others help stabilize blood sugar and support a sense of regulation and steadiness in the body. When those rhythms become dysregulated, the nervous system can experience that instability as anxiety, agitation, irritability, or fatigue.

So sometimes what feels like a mood shift or emotional overwhelm is actually a biochemical signal.

In this week’s episode of the Body-First Healing Podcast, I sit down with a friend and mentor of mine, Luis Mojica, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, herbalist, holistic nutritional counselor, life coach, and founder of Holistic Life Navigation. Luis has spent years studying the intersection of food, trauma, and the nervous system, and his work offers a compassionate and practical way to understand nourishment as part of the healing process.

Inside the conversation, we explore how food becomes part of our nervous system environment.

We talk about:

• How certain foods can trigger or calm the fight or flight response
• Why blood sugar stability plays such a powerful role in emotional regulation
• The difference between eating for long term health goals and eating for nervous system stability in the moment
• How trauma and survival patterns can shape our relationship with food and eating behaviors
• Why developing body awareness around nourishment is often more supportive than rigid diet rules

Luis also shares the philosophy behind his new book Food Therapy, which introduces a framework for conscious eating that supports the nervous system, adrenal health, and glucose balance. The central idea is simple but powerful: when we understand how nutrition impacts our emotions and physiology, every meal becomes an opportunity to support the body’s regulation rather than unknowingly working against it.

For those of you who are deeply invested in nervous system healing, this conversation adds another layer to the work. The nervous system does not just respond to our relationships and environments. It also responds to the biochemical signals created by what we consume throughout the day.
