36. Somatic Practice for Overthinking, Rumination, & Mental Loops
When your mind keeps replaying something, analyzing every angle, or trying to figure it all out, it can be hard to know how to actually interrupt the cycle.
In this week’s podcast episode, I share a 20 minute guided practice for overthinking, rumination and mental loops.
I talk about overthinking through the lens of the nervous system and explain why mental loops are often not just a mindset issue, but a physiological response in the body. When the system is activated and searching for safety, control, or resolution, the mind can start working overtime in an attempt to protect you.
I also guide you through some of the body-based tools we use to work with what is happening underneath the thoughts, including orienting, pendulation, and a simple head cradle practice. These are gentle ways of helping the body come back into the present, settle activation, and create a little more space around the spiral.
This episode offers a preview of the Body-First Healing Program. Inside the program, we gather every Monday for a Nervous System Gym call to practice regulation in real time. Learn more and apply at bodyfirsthealing.com/program.
If you have been caught in overthinking lately, I hope this conversation helps you understand yourself with more compassion and gives you a few practical ways to support your system. Tune in and take 20 minutes to get out of your head and into your body. Save this episode and come back to it whenever you need it. Healing happens at the pace your nervous system can truly hold.
