43. 6 Somatic Healing Misconceptions & Where to Begin

If you’ve been around this community for a while, you’ve probably heard me say that healing is often misunderstood.

And the truth is… somatic healing is no exception.

In fact, one of the most downloaded episodes of the Body-First Healing Podcast is the one where I unpack some of the biggest misconceptions about somatic healing — and what healing through the nervous system actually looks like in real life.

Because so many of you found this episode helpful (and shared it with others), I decided it was time to revisit and re-release this conversation.

In this episode, we explore some of the ideas that often create confusion when people begin working with the body.

You’ll learn:

  • Why somatic healing isn’t about “releasing” trauma once and for all — and what we’re actually doing when we work with the nervous system.

  • Why feeling uncomfortable during healing doesn’t mean something is wrong.

  • Why nervous system regulation doesn’t mean being calm all the time.

  • The difference between catharsis and true nervous system healing.

  • What it actually means to “build capacity” in your nervous system.

  • Simple ways to begin working with the body if you’re new to somatic healing.

One of the reasons this episode resonated so deeply is because many people start their healing journey believing they need to fix themselves, calm themselves, or force themselves into feeling better.

But healing through the nervous system is not about forcing change.

It’s about learning how to safely be with your experience so your system can gradually expand its capacity for life.

And when we begin to understand how the body actually heals, things start to make a lot more sense.

If you’ve ever wondered:

Am I doing this right?
Why do I still feel activated even though I’m working on healing?
Why doesn’t traditional “self-care” always help?

This episode will give you the clarity many people say they wish they had earlier in their journey.

And if you find it supportive, feel free to share it with someone who is beginning their healing journey. These conversations matter — and the more we understand our nervous systems, the more compassion we can bring to ourselves and each other.
